1. Technical Skills
Scales:
- Ab and E major, F and C# minor (candidate’s choice of harmonic or melodic minor). Chromatic scales:
- In similar motion starting on B (two octaves, hands together).
- In contrary motion starting on Ab (one octave).
- E major contrary motion scale (two octaves, hands together).
Arpeggios: All major and minor keys above, hands separately (two octaves).
2. Musical Knowledge
Rhythm and Time Signatures:
- Time signatures of 5/8, 7/8, and 5/4.
- Rhythmic patterns including dotted and tied notes, syncopation, and triplets in irregular meters.
Intervals and Harmony:
- Identify augmented 4ths and diminished 5ths.
- Understand and recognize parallel 5ths and octaves.
3. Musical Words and Symbols
- Dynamic and Articulation Marks: Fortepiano (fp), sforzando (sfz), and abbreviations for these where appropriate.
- Tempo and Expression Marks: Accelerando, animato, assai, con moto, ben, brio, giocoso, largo, l’istesso, maestoso, pesante, primo, sempre, senza, simile, subito, troppo, ma non troppo.
4. Aural and Sight-Reading Skills
Aural Tests:
- Identify tonality: Determine whether a piece is in a major or minor key.
- Final cadence: Recognize cadences as perfect or imperfect.
- Interval identification: Distinguish between minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, perfect fourths and fifths, and minor and major sixths.
- Sight-Reading: Play short passages with attention to dynamic, articulation, and rhythmic details.
5. Repertoire
- Perform three contrasting pieces from the Trinity Grade 4 syllabus.
- Explore works from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary styles.
6. Practice Tips
- Practice regularly in focused sessions, breaking down complex passages and gradually increasing tempo.
- Use a metronome for rhythm accuracy and record your playing to assess dynamics and articulation.
- Strengthen finger independence with Hanon No. 1–6, emphasizing clarity and precision.
